← Back to homeThe basics
SimplyKanji is a kanji learning app developed by Catalyst Code ("we," "us," or "our"). Our goal: help you read Japanese. The app uses spaced repetition—a science-backed method that shows you kanji right before you forget them—so five minutes a day adds up to real progress. No accounts, no login required. You can use a free version with limited features, or subscribe to unlock everything.
Your subscription
SimplyKanji offers a Premium subscription that unlocks all features. Here's what you need to know:
- Price: $9.99 USD per year (or equivalent in your local currency).
- Billing: Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.
- Auto-renewal: Your subscription automatically renews each year unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period.
- Renewal price: Your account will be charged $9.99 USD (or equivalent) for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
- Cancel anytime: You can cancel your subscription at any time through your Apple ID account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period—you'll keep Premium access until then.
How to manage your subscription
All subscription management happens through Apple. To cancel, change, or view your subscription:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions.
- Find SimplyKanji and tap to manage or cancel.
You can also manage subscriptions at apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
Free vs Premium
The free version of SimplyKanji lets you experience the core learning method. Premium unlocks:
- All JLPT levels (N5 through N1)
- Unlimited daily reviews
- Full spaced repetition scheduling
- Detailed progress statistics (streaks, accuracy, weak points)
- All study modes: sequential order, random shuffle, by category, or focus on kanji that challenge you
We may update Premium features over time. Any significant changes will be reflected in app updates and release notes.
Refunds
All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. Refund requests must be submitted to Apple directly. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund. We cannot process refunds directly, but we're happy to help troubleshoot any issues—just email support@simplykanji.app.
Your license to use the app
We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use SimplyKanji for personal, non-commercial purposes. This means:
- You can: Use the app to learn kanji on your personal devices linked to your Apple ID.
- You cannot: Copy, modify, distribute, sell, or reverse-engineer the app or its content.
Intellectual property
SimplyKanji—including its clean design, code, curated kanji data, and spaced repetition methodology—is owned by Catalyst Code and protected by intellectual property laws. The kanji characters themselves are part of the Japanese writing system and belong to no one. But our specific presentation, JLPT-aligned organization, and the way we've built the learning experience are our original work.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the app for any illegal purpose
- Attempt to interfere with or disrupt the app's functionality
- Scrape, harvest, or extract data from the app
- Share your subscription access with others
- Misrepresent your identity or affiliation
We reserve the right to terminate access for users who violate these terms.
Disclaimer
We believe in being honest—no marketing speak, no promises we can't keep. SimplyKanji is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. Here's what that means:
- We don't guarantee the app will be error-free or always available.
- We don't guarantee specific learning outcomes or JLPT pass rates. Your results depend on consistent practice—five minutes a day adds up, but SimplyKanji is one tool among many in your study toolkit.
- Kanji data is curated carefully, but we're human—occasional errors may exist. Report them to support@simplykanji.app and we'll fix them.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Catalyst Code is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for your subscription in the 12 months preceding the claim.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the app evolves or when legal requirements change. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you through the app or update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where Catalyst Code operates, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.
